The Dirty Dozen (Pesticides)

Every year the Environmental Working Group (EWG) releases their Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides. This guide breaks down which fruits and vegetables have the most pesticides and which have the fewest. This list should help you decide which fruits and vegetables to buy organically or locally and which ones to save money on and purchase the non-organic version. The fruits and vegetables with the least pesticides or as the EWG refers to as the “Clean Fifteen” and those with the most are called the “Dirty Dozen.”

A few findings from their report:

  • 1 single grape contained 15 pesticides
  • The average potato had more pesticides by weight than any other food
  • Single samples of celery, cherry tomatoes, imported snap peas and strawberries showed 13 different pesticides used

In the end it is up to one’s personal choice however the EWG recommends buying organic whenever possible but if your budget is tight this list should help you choose which fruits and vegetables to buy organic.
